Intro
The Civil War was the bloodiest war in American history. According to CivilWarTrust.org, over 620,000 casualties (deaths + injured) occurred during the Civil War. This war started when the north started to have more power in congress. The south wanted slavery and the north did not. The south felt scared, so they decided to leave the union. The Civil War was not civil. It was called the Civil War because it was against a civil (one) nation that turned on its self. There was the north and the south. The south wanted to secede from the union, but the United States would fail as a country if they left. The Union declared war. The south looked like they would win at the beginning. The Union needed a plan. General Winfield Scott came up with the Anaconda plan. The Anaconda plan was a three-step plan that resembled an anaconda. The anaconda was a turning point for the Civil War in the unions favor.

Although the Union had a great plan to take out the Confederate, they did not have the easiest time setting up this plan. There was a series of fights by the Confederate trying to block off the Unions attempt to blockade the foreign trade. The Union was able to send 60,000 troops on 40 steamboats to help set up the blockade. Every single one of these soldiers had to be trained for this specific task. It was not the easiest thing to pay for all these troops’ weapons as well. The Confederate was not as weak as everyone thought. They were able to hold off Richmond, Virginia. The Union had a tough time beating the Confederate but in the end, the Union overcame the struggles.

The reason the north's first part of the plan to take out the foreign trade between the South and other countries was good because it cut off the supply of goods the other nations could supply the South with. Some of those goods were guns ammo and possibly more troops. In addition, this would cut off a large portion of the South's income. The second part of the Anaconda Plan benefited the Union by enabling the ability to focus on one smaller portion of the South. Then once they had conquered all of the first portion they could move on the next. The last part of the plan was designed to show the South they had nothing left to fight for. The Union was supposed to take Richmond, Virginia. Even though the South had nothing left to fight for, they were able to stop the Union from taking it.

The Anaconda plan was spectacular. Does the plan actually compare to an anaconda snake? The plan blocked off the Confederate trade routes. By blocking the trade routes, it would not give the south resources. This is like how the anaconda snake would wrap around its prey to cut it off from the world. The wrapping is also like the second step and how they would split the confederate. Then the anaconda snake goes for its prey like how union general George McClellan tried to capture Richmond. So, yes the anaconda snake does compare to the Anaconda plan.

The Civil War had a cost. 620,000 American lives that could be injured or dead. It all started when the south felt mistreated in Congress. They got mad and left to start their own country. In the beginning of the war, the Confederate was winning. The Anaconda plan could stop this. It had three parts, the first would block the ports. There would be no flow of resources for the Confederate. Eventually the south would have to surrender because they will have no weapons or food to help the army. After that, they split the Confederate in two, making it easier to gain land and fight. Lastly, the Union will take the city of Richmond. Unfortunately, they did not capture it. If they captured the city there would be a high moral in the soldiers and the war would be shortened. The plan still did damage to the south's resources and defenses. If it were not for the Anaconda plan the Union would have never won.
